Offtaker

The buyer of power under a PPA — a utility, supplier, trading house or corporate that commits to purchase a generator’s output.

The offtaker is the counterparty that takes the generator’s power under a PPA. In GB the offtaker universe spans utilities and licensed suppliers, European energy majors, independent traders and originators, and corporate or industrial buyers contracting for their own consumption.

Offtaker creditworthiness is central to a PPA’s value: a long-dated contract is only as bankable as the counterparty standing behind it, which is why credit terms, parent guarantees and collateral arrangements feature heavily in structuring.
